6 tips for a successful PR event

Considering making the opening of your restaurant or the launch of your brand a grand affair with the press and influencers? Go for it! A well-executed PR event provides a flying start and builds brand awareness. But what should you consider? Read on for six practical tips!

Journalists, editors, content creators, and influencers are key players in making sure your target audience hears about your brand from day one. Whether you're opening a restaurant, launching a boutique hotel, introducing a new afternoon tea, or promoting your whisky, a PR event is well worth the investment. It not only boosts brand awareness but also increases your online and offline visibility. Collaborating with a notable partner or celebrating a milestone? Invite as many press and content creators as possible and give them a firsthand experience of what sets you apart. Keep these tips in mind to ensure success – they’re on the house!

  1. Be newsworthy
Your event needs to be compelling enough to attract media coverage. Journalists receive numerous invitations, so ensure you stands out. They will only cover your event if it piques their interest. Aim to be distinctive—consider hosting your event at a novel or prestigious venue, or featuring a renowned artist or exciting act. Engaging your guests with interactive elements, such as workshops, can also make your event more newsworthy.

  2. Tell your story
While you’ll want to share as much as possible about your business, keep your speech concise and impactful—ideally under three minutes. Avoid long-winded speeches that could diminish interest. Focus on your unique selling points by not only providing food or tastings but also incorporating entertainment that complements your story.
  3. Interact with your guests
Ensure there’s a dedicated time for the press to ask questions, possibly before the event begins. Familiarise yourself with the names and faces of your guests to facilitate smoother interactions and follow-ups. Remember, local press and micro-influencers can be just as valuable, if not more so, than larger titles and accounts.

  4. Emphasise your branding
Make your brand identity prominent throughout the event. Display your logo and brand colours, and ensure your storytelling aligns with your tone of voice. This helps in building brand recognition and enlarges the chance you’re featured prominently in photos and videos. Make sure everyone uses the correct social media handles and avoid mandating hashtags.
  5. Choose the right date and time
Be mindful of journalists' and content creators' working hours. Opt for an invitation time after work or in the afternoon, avoiding Fridays and weekends. Additionally, ensure there are no other major press events scheduled for your chosen date.
  6. Plan ahead
Begin planning and inviting for your event as early as possible. The sooner you start, the better. There’s a lot to consider, and your guests agendas fill up quickly.

The free publicity you gain from your investment not only helps you make an immediate impact on your target audience but also ensures long-term visibility on the web and social media.
